70,25 degrees north…

70,25 degrees north - and easternmost in Norway...

Ok… I’m moving north. Far north. Got a job in Vardø, the easternmost city in Norway and also the only city in Norway situated within the arctic clima-zone. By the end of August I´m getting there! Moving up to this area will let me experience a completely new and different aspect on DXing the mediumwave and tropical bands. Ok, yes… I’m moving up here just before the peak of the 12 year solar activity cykle, which occurs in May 2012. Bad timing, huh?? Well, even if the band conditions mostly will be poor and/or disturbed, I expect to hear radio stations that I could only dream about hearing before I got this opportunity to move up north.

This blog is about my preparations for the move, choice of receiving equipment and antennas – and when I’m settled in Vardø – what I actually have heard up there.

Enjoy!

About Hans

Male. 50 years young. DX:er since 1980. In September 2011 I moved up to Vardø on Vardøya Island (EU-141) to start working as manager for the Coast Radio station in Vardø. I feel very lucky to have this opportunity to work with the thing that I think is the most interesting in the whole world - Radio! My main interest is, yeah - you guessed right: Radio. I'm a ham radio operator, holding the callsign LA2MOA. My main radio interests is low power operation and low band DXing on the amateur bands, but also mediumwave and tropical band DX-listening. I'm also interested in angling, fly-fishing and fly-tying. The area around Vardø offers some great opportunities to do all of this. And, since I'm of swedish origin, I'm also madly interested in ice-hockey and since 35 years I'm a hardcore supporter of Rögle BK in Ängelholm - one of the few really true hockey clubs left in Sweden.

Could you please explain your statement “the only town situated within the arctic polar region”? It doesn’t make sense to me.

    Rgds Bjarne

    • Hi Bjarne!

Yes, I can. I got it from Norsk Meteoroligisk Institutt (http://met.no/Vard%C3%B8+i+Nord-Noreg.b7C_wlrIZ9.ips) who states that Vardø is the only city within the arctic clima-zone. I was, however, a bit unclear in my interpretation of that information; I called Vardø “town” instead of “city” and was unclear regarding the clima-zone-aspect. I’ll correct that.

      Thanks for the “eye’s up”!

      Hans (HR)
